Outdoor learning challenges -

Guided Reading

Brainteasers:

  1. You can see me in water but I never get wet, what am I?
  2. What has 4 legs but cannot walk?
  3. What has a spine but no bones?
  4. What is heavier, one pound of feathers or one pound of rocks? EXTRA CHALLENGE - tell me why?

Problem solving:

Symmetry challenge -

Systematically explore the range of symmetric designs that can be created by shading whole squares of the grid below.

You could use this sheet of blank grids to record your results, or simply squared paper.

Square grid formed from 9 smaller squares
How many can you find?

Four triangles puzzle -

If you cut a square diagonally from corner to corner you get four right-angled isosceles triangles.

How many different shapes can you make by fitting the four triangles back together?

You may only fit long sides to long sides and short sides to short sides.

The whole length of the side must be joined.

You might like to record what you do.

 Representing numbers -

Find as many ways of representing the number of dots shown above.
Try to find at least five ways.

Now find ways of representing ten times as many dots. Can you still find at least five different ways?

Challenges:

1. You have just found an old suitcase in your attic. Describe what you found inside.

 Think about:

  • How old are the objects?
  • Who might this suitcase have belonged to?
  • Describe what the objects look like.

Check:

  • Capital letters and full stops
  • Check your spelling in a dictionary
  • Include some interesting adjectives?

2. Write a list of 10 exciting words beginning with t. Choose some of these words and put them in a sentence.

Think about:

  • What do the words mean?
  • How could you use the word in a sentence?
  • Choosing some long words and some short

Check:

  • Capital letters and full stops
  • Check your spelling in a dictionary
  • Include some interesting adjectives?

3. Write a letter to yourself in the future about what you hope you will be doing in 10 years time.

Think about:

  • What job would you have?
  • Where would you be living?
  • Who would be your friends?

 Check:

  • Capital letters and full stops
  • Does your sentence make sense?
  • Have you put who the letter is to and from?

Challenges

Four digit challenge:

You have two sets of the digits from  0 to  9.

0-9

The idea is to arrange these digits in the five boxes to make four-digit numbers as close to the target number as possible.
You may use each digit once only.

Venn Diagrams -

Can you place the numbers from 1 to 40 into this Venn diagram?
How do you know where to put each number?

venn diagram from two overlapping circles, one set is even numbers, the other is multiples of 5

Here is another one for you to try:

venn diagram from two overlapping circles, one set is odd numbers, the other is numbers less than 20

Shapes on the playground -

Sally and Ben went outside the school to draw some very large shapes on the tarmac. None of the shapes they drew shared any sides with any other shape - they were all drawn separately although some small shapes were inside larger shapes. The children each had a box of ten sticks of chalk. Each stick drew  10  metres before it was quite worn away. They both drew shapes with all sides one metre long.

Shapes.

Sally drew squares and octagons, sixteen shapes altogether, and used up all her chalk.

How many of each shape did she draw?

Ben drew triangles, hexagons and squares. He drew  20  shapes and still had two sticks of chalk left. How many of each shape did he draw?
