Considerable importance is attached to the children achieving and understanding mathematical processes, concepts and skills. A favourable attitude is encouraged by presenting it in an interesting and enjoyable way, allowing the children to actively participate in the learning process, thus creating a sense of achievement and confidence. There is a strong emphasis on the development of mental arithmetic and giving opportunities for pupils to use and apply mathematics in real life situations. Maths is a popular and enjoyable lesson, in which pupils actively participate.
Maths is taught through a daily Numeracy lesson which follows the principles of the New National Curriculum 2014. In order to develop mathematical skills some pupils may be set for Numeracy and move between groups, either within the class or occasionally in smaller groups with dedicated staff members. Class teachers also plan for opportunities to develop and apply key mathematical skills in other subjects throughout the year to further opportunities to challenge and use and apply knowledge.
Awards are given out in assemblies each term. There are also certificates for mental maths achievements.
At Sundridge we aim to make maths fun, practical, accessible to all and most of all challenging. Interventions to support learners are regularly reviewed, with small group booster sessions and Catch up - Keep up(CUKU) sessions taking place for pupils as and when needed.
Please use your child's year group page to find out what they are learning about each half term! There are also some documents here which you may find useful:
